French Coin Collecting

How it all started

In 1996, I began collecting coins whilst on holiday. As is the case with many collectors, I started by collecting coins of my home country, England. A year later, perhaps spurred on by my half-French parentage, I purchased my first French coin. It was an uncirculated 1915 1 franc piece bearing the famous 'Sower' design by Louis Oscar Roty (1846-1911). I was so impressed by the beauty of this design, which is a wonderful example of Art Nouveau, that I soon added more French coins to my collection. I quickly realised that the images on the coins were more than just attractive pictures. Many were an accurate reflection of the artistic styles fashionable at the time the coins were produced. From the neo-classicism of the French Revolution inspired by republican Rome, through the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 30s, to the modern styles of the present day, French coins offer a great opportunity for study by the art student as well as the numismatist.

Now a self-confessed French coin addict, I have decided to use the medium of the internet to share my hobby with anyone out there who's interested and thereby perhaps to encourage others to collect French coins.

I will endeavour to add to this site as and when time permits. Please sign my guestbook and let me know of any comments and suggestions you may have.
